Here
(Chemotherapy, No. 7)
Lying down and looking up at the drip drip drip
Here
Where before I would have said
'No, not me,
too strange and not possible',
But is now
the normal and the everyday
Here
Where the air filtration system
Is louder than all 6 of us in the room.
We are a fairly quiet lot
Here
Where we come and go,
All of us for treatment
With lines in our arms,
Speaking volumes silently,
Our faces telling all manner of stories,
Our hearts filling with all manner of thoughts
Here
Where we face ourselves
Here,
Now,
Dealing with the hand
We have been dealt
Here
In this place and space
Where help and hope abide
Here
Where across from me
A young couple,
Each one less than half my age,
He the worried patient,
She the worried partner
And their combined worry
Deeper than the lines on their young faces,
Needing hope
And welcoming so the help
Here.
