If Chairs Could Talk
(Immunotherapy, No. 18)
I was early; the only patient
in this blue treatment chaired room
On the ward.
Empty,
The two chairs across from me
And the one on my left -
Almost human:
Square head, big ears,
Solid body, long outstretched arms,
Sitting, legs together, waiting.
As I waited too, for fellow patients
To turn them back
To chairs again.
They have held,
And will hold again
So many stories to tell.
If they could talk,
They would never stop.
These chairs have seen and heard it all.
Later,
Sitting across from me,
All of "42 kilos," as she told the nurse.
The chair seemed so huge
And she so breakable and small.
"I will hold her safe
And keep her from all harm"
I heard her chair say.
