I Like My Saints Scruffy
(Immunotherapy, No. 22)
I like my saints scruffy,
A bit battered, beat up and bruised -
Real
Like the patients here,
Patient-for-the-most-part
On this oncology day ward
My too-thin friends,
Wry smiles some,
Waiting,
Always waiting
(A day can last a long time;
A week, forever)
And wondering
About it all,
At every stage of
Beat up, battered and bruised -
Some treatment days less so,
Other treatment days more,
These, the saints here,
Have a scruffy, hard time of it,
All haloes askew.
Real like.
