Full of Beans
(Chemotherapy, No. 10)
Full of beans -
And biscuits too she was,
Giving 'animated'
New meaning altogether.
All motion, all chat,
Showering crumbs and care
Across the ward.
Alive enough for all of us,
Cancer be damned,
As if it would bounce right off her
And dare not try to return.
I was watching her
As the drops came sliding down
At an angle this time,
One at a time, taking their time -
No need to rush
As the machine became a metronome,
Tick tock tick,
Sliding down into me,
Doing what they were meant to do,
And good at it too;
So much so
They had a hard time
Finding the tumour
After the CT scan -
Now that's nice.
And across the ward,
The dear, full still of beans and biscuits,
Reanimates all of us,
Smiles edging out
Our worries and fears.
